Narutaki Namazu

205 × 75 × 28 mm · transparent lacquer · mounted on a generous, hand-lacquered urushi base

Wet, pink waves rise across the light-brown surface.

Very soft — the white namazu areas softer still. A beginner-friendly stone with finger stones behind it, or a wonderful pre-finisher. It performs on everything, single or double bevel: iron clad, and — surprisingly — tough honyaki, stainless and mono steel.

It leaves a bright clad and a fine, hazy core. The edge comes off with a fine toothiness — this is the stone I'd take to the edge of a single-bevel stainless blade.

You will feel the namazu lines. You can erase them, and it's the easiest job KREAM Haze will ever get — in this particular case, about one second per centimeter of blade, light pressure.

a starter portion of KREAM Haze is included: it's the one-second-per-centimeter pass this stone asks for

Notes from use — The mud comes creamy and beige, a full stone of it inside thirty seconds. It drinks, but it forgives: water added in a rush just makes more sauce. When the mud thickens it can pull lightly at the blade, a moment of suction — a splash frees it. More water is the friend here.

The shop is a sample of what I keep. If the finish you want isn't listed — a different size, a different character, something between two swatches — tell me your blade and your budget. There's no finish in this space I can't reach: I'll match it, or I'll make it.

Nothing quite right? I'll check my drawers.
